This Kiwi Bird digital paint-by-numbers artwork was one of the first pieces I created for Wattle Fern Studio. I designed it for my son as he began exploring paint by numbers and learning how enjoyable it can be to complete an artwork one colour at a time.
Kiwi are shy, nocturnal birds native to New Zealand. They are unusual little creatures that usually come out after dark, making them a lovely subject for a calm and gentle colouring experience.
In the video below, you can watch the real Kiwi Bird colouring file being completed in Procreate, from the numbered canvas through to the finished artwork.
Designed with beginners in mind
This artwork was created as an approachable introduction to digital paint by numbers. The numbered sections and matching colour palette make it easy to work through the image gradually, without needing drawing or painting experience.
It is a simple way to become familiar with colouring in Procreate while enjoying the satisfaction of seeing the kiwi slowly come to life.
A meaningful first creation
Because I designed this artwork for my son, it has always felt especially meaningful to me. It represents the beginning of his own creative journey, as well as the early stages of Wattle Fern Studio.
I wanted to create something that felt achievable, enjoyable and connected to our New Zealand heritage. The kiwi was the perfect choice: familiar, charming and full of personality.
See the real colouring process
The video shows the actual digital paint-by-numbers file being used from beginning to end. Each numbered area corresponds with a colour in the included palette, allowing the finished artwork to develop one section at a time.
Sharing the complete colouring process helps show exactly what the kit is like to use and what you can create with it.
