My children LOVE Christmas, and Kiwi Flight was inspired by a children’s story about Santa visiting a family while they were holidaying in New Zealand. I loved the idea of combining the magic of Christmas with the familiar colours, wildlife and summer atmosphere of Aotearoa.

A Kiwi Christmas story

Christmas in New Zealand has its own special feeling. Instead of snow and winter skies, it arrives with long summer days, coastal holidays and bright red pōhutukawa flowers.

That contrast inspired this artwork. Kiwi Flight brings together the wonder of Christmas with a distinctly New Zealand setting, creating a playful scene that feels festive without losing its local character.

Inspired by the pōhutukawa

The bright red pōhutukawa flowers were one of my favourite parts of this artwork to colour. They are especially prominent in New Zealand during the Christmas season and are often associated with summer celebrations.

Their vivid red tones gave the artwork a cheerful festive energy and helped bring warmth and movement to the finished scene.

A real digital colouring experience

This video shows the genuine Wattle Fern Studio colouring file being completed from start to finish. Each numbered area corresponds with a colour in the included palette, allowing the artwork to develop gradually, one section at a time.

From Procreate to our Samsung TV

Once Kiwi Flight was complete, we displayed it on our Samsung Frame TV in early December. It brought a bright festive feeling into our home and became part of our Christmas decorating.

I love that a completed digital paint-by-numbers artwork can continue to be enjoyed after the colouring process is finished, whether it is displayed on a digital frame, printed or saved as part of a personal art collection.
